According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the directors general of military operations for India and Pakistan have decided to cease all firings and military operations on land, in the air, and at sea as of 5 p.m.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi must now more than ever lead an all-party meeting and win over political parties to his cause after India and Pakistan agreed to an emergency truce, the Congress said on Saturday.
In order to discuss the events of the last eighteen days, the opposition party also insisted that the administration call a special session of Parliament.
“With the unprecedented announcements from Washington, DC, there is now a need, more than ever before, for the prime minister to chair an all-party meeting and take political parties into confidence,” said Jairam Ramesh, general secretary in charge of communications for the Congress, in a post on X.
The brief statement was made just after US President Donald Trump declared that following US-mediated negotiations, India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire.
Hours after the Indian and Pakistani forces assaulted one another’s facilities, threatening to escalate the impasse, the US-brokered ceasefire was announced.
Following conversations with Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made Trump’s declaration.
