He has reaffirmed his worries, stating that it may be possible for superintelligent AI to appear as early as 2029. In 2024, the CEO of Tesla said in a live-streamed discussion on his social media platform X, “I think we’ll have AI that is smarter than any one human, probably around the end of next year (2025).”

An open letter demanding a temporary halt to AI models that outperform OpenAI’s GPT-4 was signed in 2023 by more than 33,700 AI researchers and industry experts, who cited “profound risks to society and humanity.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed his worries, saying he is “a little scared” of what might happen as a result of AI’s quick development. Toby Walsh, an AI researcher at the University of New South Wales AI Institute, thinks that while artificial superintelligence is unavoidable, it might develop gradually as opposed to suddenly.
Musk has often emphasized the need for prudence by warning about the possible risks associated with AI. He made the following statement while speaking at the 2024 Abundance 360 Summit, which was organized by Singularity University in Silicon Valley: “When you have the advent of superintelligence, it’s very difficult to predict what will happen next—there’s some chance it will end humanity.”
He has also warned about the potential for an AI-led disaster and made analogies to dystopian science fiction. Referring to the movie series in which an AI system fights mankind, he stated, “It’s actually important for us to worry about a ‘Terminator’ future in order to avoid a ‘Terminator’ future.”
“If I could press pause on AI or really advanced AI digital superintelligence, I would,” Musk said at the 2023 launch of his AI business xAI, expressing his displeasure at the inability to stop the advancement of AI. Since that doesn’t seem feasible, xAI will essentially create an AI—ideally a positive one.”
Governments and business executives are investigating legislation to avoid unforeseen effects as AI development picks up speed. According to market research firm Next Move Strategy Consulting, the AI market, which is presently valued at $100 billion, is expected to nearly double in size to reach $2 trillion by 2030.
