The bloodiest attack in the valley since the Pulwama incident in 2019 claimed the lives of 26 persons, primarily tourists, when terrorists opened fire on a well-known meadow close to Pahalgam town in Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon.

Two foreigners and two locals were among the dead, a senior official informed PTI without providing specifics.

A popular destination for tourists from all over the nation and the world, Baisaran is a vast meadow surrounded by mountains and thick pine forests, approximately six kilometers from the resort town of Pahalgam.

According to officials and witnesses, armed terrorists entered the grassland, known as “mini Switzerland,” and began shooting at visitors who were gathered around restaurants, enjoying picnics, or riding ponies.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow organization of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group located in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack as word spread.

According to the officials, there is a chance that members of the terror outfit traveled from Kishtwar in Jammu to Baisaran via Kokernag in south Kashmir.

Both Home Minister Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to crack down hard on the terrorists and to ensure that they are held accountable.

After hearing the news, Shah hurried to Srinagar, where he met with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Deka, and Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha for a high-level security review.

Via video conference, J&K Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, CRPF Chief Gyanendra Pratap Singh, and a few Army officials also participated in the meeting.
