Tata Group became the first domestic iPhone maker in India when it successfully paid $125 million to acquire Wistron’s iPhone production facility in October. The company is now aiming to construct one of the biggest iPhone assembly plants in India, fulfilling Apple’s goal of expanding production there.
Tata already owns the Wistron assembly plant, which is situated close to Bangalore, Karnataka. Tata is currently aiming to construct a second factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, according to a report by Bloomberg.
In its first two years of operation, the new facility is anticipated to feature about 20 assembly lines and create jobs for over 50,000 people. The facility is expected to start operations in the upcoming 12 to 18 months, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
In comparison to other factories worldwide, the new iPhone plant is anticipated to be medium sized. Larger than the one Tata bought from Wistron, which employs over 10,000 people, it would be. Nevertheless, it will remain smaller than Foxconn’s biggest production plants in China, which employ tens of thousands of people.
The Tata group is hiring more people at its current Hosur plant, which makes metal casings and iPhone enclosures, in addition to building a second production.
Tata has also declared its intention to open one hundred retail locations that will sell just Apple goods.
As part of its efforts to lessen its dependency on China, Apple has been growing its production in India recently, producing roughly 7% of all iPhones there as well as sourcing internal components.
As of right now, every iPhone 15 sold in India is produced there and exported to other countries.
One of Apple’s biggest manufacturing partners, Foxconn, based in China, has made considerable investments in India. A new factory being built by the contract manufacturer in Karnataka will have the capacity to produce 20 million iPhones a year. There are plans to build another facility with a comparable capacity.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple and its suppliers intend to create 50 million iPhones a year in India within the next two to three years, which would make up 25% of the world’s total output by 2030. China will continue to be the biggest producer, nevertheless.
